A Fan’s Story – Kentucky Derby Memories: My Wife’s Pink Boots

We asked our readers to send us their favorite Kentucky Derby memories, and the responses have already started coming in.  Here is a great story from Josh Graham, about a trip to Churchill that will always hold a special place in his and his wife’s hearts…

My fourth Kentucky Derby and the second with my wife, Jeri, will always be our most memorable. After getting through her battle with breast cancer, Jeri was nominated to walk in the Cancer Survivor Parade on Oaks Day. It was a very emotional day and stepping out onto the track where Secretariat, Affirmed, and countless other champions have run just gave us goosebumps. Not only was it a great week of bourbon and visiting retired race horses like Silver Charm, it was icing on the cake that the next day at the Derby, we were cheering home American Pharoah. The fact that he went on to win the Triple Crown made the trip one for the ages – and one of our greatest adventures.

The only sad part was when we got home and I took her pink boots out of the bag… some dirt spilled all over the carpet and it was too late before I realized that it was Churchill Downs dirt 🙁

Josh, thank you so much for sharing your story with us.  As a small “thank you” we will be sending you a selection from the new Railbirds collection at The Pick Insider Shop.

Keep sending us your memories from Kentucky Derby weekends – past or present. We’d love to share them with our readers.
